These start as brand-new OEM assemblies, we can offer them in stock (1:1 High Range, 2.49:1 Low Range) gearing or with 10% High Range Overdrive or 10% High Range Underdrive gears. We also offer 3.1 low range gears which is a 25% reduction from stock.
Fitment Notes:
Will this fit other Cruisers? Will it fit my 80 Series?
This case can be fitted in place of any HF2A and HF2AV t-case found in all 1990-2007 8x, IFS 100 and LX450/LX470 Land Cruisers. 1993-1997 FZJ80 and LX450 models will require a longer rear driveshaft as these cases do not have the viscous coupler. You can use the rear shaft from an FJ80 or have your original shaft lengthened. Should you want to keep your viscous coupler and original driveshaft, we can offer the parts individually or pre-build a used core case with the same parts.
Tech Notes:
Is this better than gearing axles?
It's different. The 10% underdrive is the exact same end ratio as going from a factory 4.10 (08/2002-2007 UZJ100/LX470) to 4.56 axle gearing or very similar to taking a 4.30 (01/1998-07/2002 UZJ100/LX470) to 4.88 axle gearing. While axle gearing requires substantial tear-down and specialized tools to setup and build differentials, t-case options can be swapped in the driveway and our complete built t-case offerings can make the job a 3-4 hour event, start to finish. (See Gear Ratio Chart Below)
Why would I re-gear my t-case rather than axles?
Fantastic question. If your axles need to be rebuild, you're planning to add lockers or your t-case was recently rebuilt, re-gearing your axles may be a better option and we stock all those parts and/or complete build differentials too. However, you can't get anywhere near the overall low range crawl ratio out of axle gears alone and the 3.1:1 gears we offer will yield a much better low range ratio. (See Gear Ratio Chart Below)
My t-case is in great shape, why would I buy a new one?
Don't! We can set you up with all the high range, low range, part-time and rebuild parts to service your existing case. This setup is intended for the user that doesn't have the time or comfort level to overhaul a t-case. The HF2A/HF2AV cases take special pullers and quite detailed shim and clip measuring and replacement when overhauling. Some simply want an easier solution and this is the best option for simplicity.
How hard is a complete case to install?
Very straightforward. The case 'divorces' from the transmission very cleanly.
- Unbolt drive-lines (8 nuts), move drive-lines to the side or fully remove from vehicle (by removing at the pinion side as well)
- Disconnect switch/control plugs on old t-case (4 plugs total, 3 switches and 1 CDL actuator)
- Disconnect vent tube from CDL Actuator
- Disconnect High-Low Shift Linkage from T-Case (1 nut)
- Remove the Speedometer Driven Unit (1 bolt)
- Support the transfer case with a jack
- Remove bolts mating the t-case and transmission, slide t-case back and lower from vehicle
- Swap any parts necessary to new t-case assembly
- Using jack, lift and mate new t-case assembly to the transmission.
- Replace and torque mating bolts
- Re-connect (4) plugs, (1) vent tube and High-Low Shift Linkage
- Replace Speedometer Driven Unit (new avail @ Cruiser Outfitters)
- Re-Install and torque drive-lines
- ADD GEAR LUBE TO NEW UNIT
- Test High-Low and CDL function
- Enjoy!
